I am a professor of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences at Purdue University. I earned my B.A. in Linguistics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1991, and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in Cognitive Psychology and Linguistics in 1999. I completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences at the University of Hong Kong, and have been at Purdue since 2002.
My current research revolves around understanding the short- and long-term consequences of communication challenges (hearing loss, noise exposure), with a focus on relating data from laboratory experiments to field research and epidemiological studies. I am particularly interested in the interaction between hearing-related cognitive demand (“listening effort”) and balance and fall risk, as well as other chronic health issues such as psychological distress and cardiovascular disease.
