Abstract: Students first learn their diagnostic approaches on adults. This may suggest that work with this patient population is simple and straightforward. This grand rounds session will demonstrate that learning opportunities remain even for seasoned clinicians. Topics will include discussions related to audiologic masking procedures, comprehensive tinnitus evaluations, testing considerations in complex cases, the consideration of communication needs beyond the pure-tone audiogram, and the importance of individualized counseling. Four presenters will share cases from their clinical practice. Each presentation will illustrate an evidenced-based approach to clinical decision making. Opportunities for audience participation will be provided.

Brief Summary of Clinical Takeaways: The clinical takeaway for this session is for audiologists to consider and apply the range of assessment tools available to properly assess and counsel patients who present with auditory-related difficulties.

Assumptions: Attendees should have basic knowledge and skills related to diagnostic practices in audiology. They also should have prior experiences interacting with adult patients in an audiology setting.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this session, the participant will be able to describe different types of evaluation procedures for patients who may be seen in audiology practices and evaluate the evidence base for their use.
